About Me

Julia Sanders, MSW, LCSW, LCSW-C, LICSW

Hello and welcome. I am so glad you are here! Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Julia Sanders and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 6 years of experience helping folks heal their traumas and live the lives that they choose to live more authentically. I am currently providing in-person services in Northern Virginia as well as virtual services in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, New York, and Florida. For more information about my licenses, where I have permission to practice, and information on some of my trainings please scroll to the "Credentials" section of this page below.

I am a hyper-creative person who utilizes many somatic based and creative interventions that are rooted in evidence-based practice to help meet client’s needs and/or provide them with the missing experiences that their nervous system craves.

I am a lot of things, I am not perfect. I do not believe in my ability to be perfect, I believe in my ability to be ethical and my ability to repair. I do not bring ego or AI into the therapeutic space (I don't intentionally bring AI anywhere actually), meaning that the offerings you receive from me are just that, offerings. None of the interventions we try are AI generated and none of them are required. This extends to documentation and research, I do things the old fashioned way, via research and critical thinking not a quick summary that I cannot track the source.

I am a bit of a nerd and always searching for a new book to read, intervention to understand, and/or training to study. More often than not I am enrolled in some sort of training to help inspire me to see what offerings exist for clients and determine which align with my area of expertise to incorporate them into my own work with clients. That being said, I firmly believe that therapy is not the only way in which people can heal themselves.

Therapy is a wonderful resource that can help people empower themselves to overcome their challenges, and it is a modern, organized strategy that requires privilege to access. Our ancestors utilized many strategies to heal such as healing circles, rituals, dancing, prayer/worship, elders, aunties/uncles, yoga, chanting, and parts to name a few on this non-exhaustive list. I honor the wisdom of those who came before me and those who continue to learn and grow in my practice and acknowledge that the trainings and education I have are rooted in these beautiful ancient indigenous practices.

Much like our ancestors, I believe that community is the antidote of trauma and when possible and appropriate I empower clients to find their community to empower continued healing rooted in mutual support outside of the therapeutic space.

Identity

I am a Queer, Neurodivergent, older sister/eldest child, chronically ill, Puerto Rican woman who believes in intersectional care that honors the realities that oppressive systems directly impact our capacity to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. I am actively involved in numerous strategies to care for myself independently as well as community-based strategies to ensure that my needs are met and I can show up fully available to session for my clients.I am a therapist who is in therapy which allows me to better connect with folks as I too have to do hard things to grow and continue to care for myself.

When I am not working with clients or engaged in a training you can find me snuggled up with my two cats Newman and Ralphie, training for roller derby, painting, creating pottery, or going on a new adventure. I also love spending as much time as possible creating art which is a skill that I bring into the therapy space. I am also a collector of cookbooks and spoons, lover of dinosaurs and sharks, and fierce believer in the power of wishes.
